De La Salle and George Jackson Academies' visit to Gallery Henoch

Tom DeLong, professor at Harvard Business School in a case study on De La Salle Academy wrote: 'the school is a model that responds rapidly and effectively to the needs of the students they serve. The creation of a curriculum that challenges the youngsters to think, to reach for excellence, and to live and work as a community of brothers and sisters who demand the best of one another, is what makes this school special'.

Eight years ago, Ellen spent a day with the kids at De La Salle Academy and vowed to involve them in the mural project. "I love this school, I love the kids, their enthusiasm, their response to academic challenge, and their generosity of spirit". When the time came to invite a New York middle school to work on a project in the gallery, Ellen called Brother Brian Carty, the school's founder and principal. He was very excited and recommended she include their newly established brother school, George Jackson Academy.

On October 5th, while the pieces of the American Mural Project were on display at Gallery Henoch, classes from De La Salle Academy and George Jackson Academy came to see the installation and, in the spirit of the mural tribute, to make a portrait of a worker they know and admire.

Nancy Arcieri, a teacher at De La Salle who accompanied the class, wrote to Ellen after the project: "As I stood in that gallery, it felt clear to me that the mural will be a new kind of map of our country - you're making Winsted a destination spot, but then taking every person on a tour of the country while they're there. And imagine the possibilities for designing curriculum around the project - history, geography, art, creativity, American culture, sociology, etc. The mural is a course in itself."
